Traveled
from

via MATS air service all the way to Tokyo. Trip took three days,
in the summer heat with my dress blues on. Left arm so sore
from my overseas shots I could hardly carry my seabag. Had
stops in San Francisco, Pearl Harbor, Quam, Wake & Midway.
(maybe not in that order, but we stopped there). After a
wild Navy bus ride from Tokyo to Yokosuka, arrived at Sabalo about
1900 Hrs. She looked so menacing, all in black alongside the
dock, I was thrilled. Reported aboard, and the
quarterdeck watch told me that she was leaving in the morning to
go back to Pearl.

swapped boats and I was off to Westpac again. He was happy

a
short

a
very
interesting

I
left

It was like going from cream to sour milk. We had 12 hours a day
of scrubbing a very dirty boat on our way to west pac and when we
arrived in Honolulu, we had a well scrubbed dirty boat. I was
truly spoiled on the Sabalo."
"Anyway,

in Clinical Psychology. Never did a thing with the degree. Since
then, I have been a Photographer, Construction worker, accountant
(hello John Leconte) a cabinet maker, over a 15 year period, I
owned 2 restaurants and a motion picture industry catering company
in Hollywood, spent a few years as a PGA teaching Pro in Long
Beach and then back to Construction. For the last 10 years I have
been a project superintendent and project manager for 4 different
construction companies in the Los Angeles and Orange County area
in Southern Ca.
I have been
married twice and, sadly, divorced twice. I have 2 boys by my
second marriage and am blessed with a 16 year old and an 11 year
old who are both super kids. Alex, the 16 year old is the drum
captain for the marching band at Los Alamitos High School, a
Junior this year, and Jamison, the 11 year old is one of the top 3
soccer players in his age group in AYSO 177. We have a great time
together. We golf; ski at Mammoth Mountain 2 or 3 times a
year-- well, I ski and the boys snowboard, and because they
are both in the Junior Lifeguard program, we spend a lot of time
in the ocean. They keep me way younger than my 58 years."

expect, these cameras are also used onboard U.S.
Navy ships and submarines including the NR-1, and the recently

from June, 1958 to April, 1961. I only served on the Sabalo
for a short time (from November, 1961 through February,

transferring me to COMSUBFLOT 7, in Yokosuka, Japan. If my
memory serves me, I was transferred to the Carbonero in February,
1962, just prior to Sabalo's deployment to WesPac for six
months. I only served on the Carbonero for three months,
until my transfer in May, 1962 to 3+ year assignment at COMSUBFLOT

went to Grayback LPSS-574 in 1968.
"I managed to
get to Master Chief and retired after 26 years total time.
Had a few interesting assignments after I left Sabalo and mostly
exactly what I had asked for. I really enjoyed the Navy,
therefore I had no intentions of getting out unless something
drastic happened and left me no choice. The friends and
acquaintences that I met will last forever. Now, its just
about everywhere I go, there is someone that I know. After I
retired in 1981 from the Naval Hospital in Oakland, I went to work
for the state in the correctional facility here in
Vacaville. That was really something, and I didn't cope with
it very well. After that I went to work for Mobil Oil Co. in
their seismic research division. I got my Coast Guard Purser
liscense and sailed with them for about 4 years running a 5 bed
hospital and doing all the supply and administrative duties, also
as Safety Officer. Was a great job and enjoyed it
tremendously, but it was like away from home too much, and I had
gotten remarried and had 2 children, so that was not for me in the
long run. I then went to work at Mare Island Shipyard in the
Radiation Health branch, stayed there until it closed in 1995,
then went to work at McClellan AFB in Sacramento.
Worked there as an Industrial Hygienist until I retired just this
past September(2000). Both the children are gone, the youngest a
son is in the Navy, stationed at Lemoore NAS and is enjoying it
quite well. He is an AD and wants to fly but had a vision
problem. He says that he will get it corrected and then
reapply. He went to San Jose State before he went into the
Navy. The eldest, a daughter is living in Nashville and is a
CPA with a firm there. So now its just me and the wife and
we enjoy just spending time together and traveling whenever we get
the notion. Can't say that I have had many bad days until
recently. Had open heart surgery for a quadruple bypass, but
came out of that with flying colors and now do mostly odds and
ends and golf." [recd 2001] Debick, Thomas Recalled

Just a note to let you know that my Dad,
James T. Gartley, Jr., who was on the USS Sabalo in (I believe)
1965, passed away on 4/9/09. Dad fought a long, brave battle
against COPD. Guess smoking all those unfiltered Pal Mall
and Camel cigarettes over the years finally got to him.
In going through all of Dad’s memorabilia
for a scrapbook I’m compiling on his proud Navy Career, I came
across your postcard “looking for men who served on the
submarine”. After leaving Hawaii, we landed in Norfolk,
Virginia for about 6 months and then onto Connecticut where Dad
retired from the Navy and began his second career with Electric
Boat in Groton, CT. Funny thing: I remember saying to Mom
that now we have Dad around all the time, no more ‘out to
sea’. However, he ended up volunteering for sea trials; it
was truly what he loved.
Attached is a copy of his obituary and my
biggest regret is that we could not find a picture of Dad in his
Chief Dress Uniform.
Thanks to all of you for serving our country.
Sincerely, Nancy (proud to be a ‘Squid Kid’) Gartley

Montville - James T. Gartley Jr., 81, of Oakdale, beloved husband
of 57 years to Nancy Mary (Shutt) Gartley, passed away on
Thursday, April 9, 2009, at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in
New London, surrounded by his family.
He was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., on July 27, 1927, to the late
Sarah (Cavan) and James T. Gartley Sr.
During his formative years, James lived in Plains, Pa., and
graduated from Plains High School in 1945. Two days after
graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy to help his mother support the
family. He proudly served his country for 20 years and retired as
a chief petty officer. James worked as an assistant engineer for
nuclear submarines at General Dynamics/ Electric Boat division,
retiring after 20 years. James was very active in the community as
past chief and lifetime member of the Chesterfield Fire Co., where
he was their favorite bingo caller and chairman of the ambulance
committee. He was a well known little league umpire for District
10, a 4th degree Knight of Columbus, and member of the Fleet
Reserve.
James is survived by his wife, Nancy M. Gartley of Oakdale; three
children, Nancy A. Gartley of Oakdale, James C. Gartley III of
West Haven, and John C. Gartley and his wife, Deb, of Windsor; his
sisters, Elizabeth Segeda and her husband, Joseph, of Plains, Pa.,
and Marjorie Roslewicz and her husband, Andrew, of Kendall Park,
N.J.; sister-in-law, Jessie B. Riley of Binghamton, N.Y.;
grandchildren, Jocelyn, Nicole, Nicholas, Jamie Lynn, and Amanda;

I was looking
on your site because the Sabalo was one of my Dad's
boats. I remember it as a child in Pearl Harbor. He
was stationed there until 1958 and it was always a challenge to
recognize him after 6 months at sea as he grew a different beard
or mustache each tour.
My Dad retired
from the Navy in 1966 as full Lt. He was ship superintendent of
building the John Adams (620) in Portsmouth, N.H. from 1961-64 and
served on the sub tender Bushnell in Key West from 64-66.
I am sad to
tell you he died on June 22, 1996 in Kennett,

will tell you that I enjoyed being a Navy Brat and am still very
proud of his submarine service. I have a small submarine

a member of St. Patrick's Church. John was a veteran of the U.S.
Navy serving 20 years on submarines during World War II and Korea
with the rank of TM1(SS) E-6.
The following
citation was awarded to John from the Secretary of the Navy:
"For heroic performance of duty while
serving on board the U.S.S. COCHINO (SS-345) when that vessel
was fatally damaged by a series of battery explosions during
submergence operations off the northwestern coast of Norway,
August 25, 1949.When the COCHINO
was shaken by explosions and the forward compartments had become
filled with toxic gasses, fire and smoke, HANEY remained at the
helm until rendered unconscious by the untenable conditions.
Disregarding personal danger after being revived, he voluntarily
entered the gas filled forward torpedo room in an attempt to
make it habitable for the crew and later, succeeded in running a
safety line from the bridge to the after torpedoroomdespite heavy seas
washing the unprotected deck of the COCHINO. By his courage in
the face of extreme personal danger, and his skilled performance
of duty in time of emergency, HANEY rendered valuable assistance
to his commanding officer and upheld the highest traditions of
the United States Naval Service."

"I
graduated from high school in Dallas, Texas in 1962. After
graduation I helped move the family to Bemus Point, NY where I
then planned to join the Army (boyhood ambition, what can I
say). I went into the post office to join but never got to
the Army recruiter after seeing a big poster in the Navy
recruiters window with some white-hat sticking his head out of a
submarine hatch. I joined on July 24,1962 in Buffalo, NY,
went to boot and MM 'A' school in Great Lakes then to Sub school
in New London. While in New London the Thresher sank.
My first boat was the USS Barbero (SSG 317) out
of Pearl (May 1963- Jan 1964) Barbero was a missile boat and
carried two Regulus II nuke warhead birds. Made FN and
earned my Dolphins while on a 120 day northern run. I stood
watches in the Aux Rm (former Fwd Engine Room). Barbero was
a Jimmy boat with two main engines and a dinky. When she was
scrapped the hanger was sent to Viet Nam as a pressurized
operating room.
After giving Nuclear Power School a short try I was assigned to
Sabalo (SS302), reporting on board May 11, 1964. I made MM3,
MM2, and MM1 while on Sabalo. Paula and I married (36 years now),
we had our first daughter, and I graduated from Divers School
while in Pearl on the Sabalo. Went on two West Pacs, 1964
and 1965, moved home port to San Diego and went through a yard
period in Mare Island (started August or September, 1966). I
was a throttle man in the Forward Engine room while on Sabalo.
Transferred to the USS Spinax (SS489) in July
of 1967 where I stood air manifold watches (ears were shot).
Went back to the yards; then was separated from the Navy on July
22, 1968.
Attended Jr. College in California then transferred to the
University of Arizona from where I graduated with a BS in Mining
Engineering in 1973. My first job out of school was in SE
Ohio working for Consolidation Coal (1973-1975). While there
we adopted our second daughter.
Since 1975 I have worked for North American
Coal Corporation in ND, Dallas, and currently in Ackerman,
Mississippi (you might ask where in the hell is that?). We
are just completing the construction of MS first coal mine, a 3.6
million ton per year surface operation featuring an 82 cubic yard

"I got out in
August of 1969 while Sabalo was at Mare Island for a yard
period. I signed up with the Reserves when I got home and am
now on the retired reserve list as ETCS(SS)(RET). I
went to work for Ingalls Shipbuilding in October of that year as
an Electronics Technician in a sonar crew. They were
starting a submarine overhaul program and were glad to see
me. The first boat they overhauled was the T2. I
started on the second one, SS 576. After that we overhauled
(11) 593 and 637 class fast attacks. I only stayed in
the Electronics crew 2 years and transferred to Production
Planning. There, I had time to attend the University of
Southern Mississippi at night and finally ended up with a degree
in Business. I am now (2003) retired from Ingalls
Shipbuilding (now part ofNorthrupGrumman) where I was on the VP of
Operations admin staff. He is a retired Navy ADM, and is
responsible for all production work."
"About 7
years after getting off active duty, my wife and I decided that we
must have God in our lives to survive. That was 26 years
ago. We are about to celebrate our 39th wedding

we are really enjoying our later years with our three girls and
all our grandchildren living within 25 miles of us."

Hydock, Robert
"He enlisted under the "Kiddie Cruise Program" 12 days after his
17th birthday in 1957. He was a native Bostonian and
maintained that accent to a lesser degree when I knew him, but
apparently it was pretty thick when he was young Navy man.
Hawaii was his first duty station. I believe he was on
Sabalo from 57 to middle of 59. His next ship was USS
Grayback 574 as a main controllerman. Sadly he passed away
of a heart attack on April 25, 1986 in Watertown, NY. I
don't know his nicknames as he spent longer tours on the Grayback
and USS Redfin 272. He was on the Redfin when they had to
look for the Thresher. He left the Navy as a Petty Officer
First Class in 1967-68. He actually had passed the
qualification for Chief six months prior, but his CO would not
approve unless he re-enlisted for another tour - something he was
not willing to do because my three older brothers were still young
and he wanted to see his kids grow up. My mother said that
they were going to send him to officer training school, but again
after 10 years with a 5 year old, 3 year old and 2 year old sons
(my three older brothers), and a good talk with a former CO who
had grown sons who didn't want anything to do with their father
because he was at sea all the time, my father decided not to
re-enlist, and sought jobs in the private sector. He became
a plant engineer (after running his own electrical contractor
business for 9 years) his nome de plume was
"Electrician/Electrical Engineer." He was a good man and I know
that the Navy had shaped him very well as a person and a career
professional. "

Marvin

King
died
October
8,
2006,
in
Watertown,
Wisconsin
of
thyroid
cancer.
He
was
diagnosed
in
2002
and
was
told
he
had
6 months to live but lived for 4 more years enjoying golfing,
hunting, anything outside up until the last 6 months. He was
a great man, father of three girls that he loved dearly and seven
grand children he totally enjoyed. Dad was a self made
engineer that never attended college but did quite well with
his life. After the war he went to work for Baldwin Lima
Hamilton, in Hamilton, Ohio, and worked on the big diesel
train engines. For a time, when I was a child, we lived
in Hawaii on Oahu where he set up machinery for the Dole Pineapple
Company. He worked for many years for Carnation Company in
the Can Division in Wisconsin. From there he went to Crown Cork
and Seal in their Can Division in St. Louis and then New
Jersey. He ended up back in Hamilton working for a family
friend and designing machinery that made cement board. He
retired there and worked at golf courses to play golf. When
he became ill from the cancer, Mom and Dad moved back to Wisconsin
to be closer to "the girls" and their families.
Dad
spent
most
of
his
Naval career
on
the
USS
JACK
and
ended
up
on
the
USS
Sabalo
at
the
end
of
his
career
to
go
home.
It
was
great
for
my
Mom to get the postcard and for me to be able to surf the
website. I loved the stories and the pictures. Dad is
in the picture of the original crew. He is in the second row
from the top, right side, second in. It was also great to see his
name on the USS SABALO original roster. I made copies for
Mom.
I also would be anxious to hear if others died from thyroid cancer
that could have been caused by the asbestos.
Thanks
again for your persistence on finding his family. Again, I am
Winnie Saeger, his daughter. My email address is winsaeggmail.com if you need any more info.
King, Evans
Evans Paliku
Kanaiaupuni King, a retired Navy captain who dedicated his life
to the military, died July 10 due to complications from
pneumonia. He was 86. He was the youngest son of former Hawaii
Gov. Samuel Wilder King and brother of federal Senior Judge
Samuel P. King.
Born in
Halekou, Hawaii, Evans King spent 30 years working for the Navy.
He served on a submarine at the nuclear bomb testing at Bikini
Atoll, was commander of the submarine USS Torsk leading the
fleet in the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway, and was a
submarine squadron commander during the Cuban missile blockade,
according to a statement by his two daughters.
King was
captain of the oiler USS Manatee during the Vietnam War, chief
of staff of the 14th Naval District, Pearl Harbor, and earned
two Legion of Merit awards, the statement said.
"He loved the
adventure, the travel, meeting new people; he loved the
challenges," said his eldest daughter, Pamela Savage.
Following his
naval career, King spent 20 years helping military families in
Honolulu plan their future after discharge and retirement. He
also assisted Navy widows who needed financial help, said
Savage.
"He had a good
affinity for what families needed and communicated that. It was
a tough job, but he believed in it because he knew what it was
like if they weren't prepared financially," Savage said.
Besides work,
King enjoyed an active lifestyle. On his 70th birthday, he hiked
in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia, and at age 76 canoed
for five days along the Caledonian Canal in Scotland, stopping
at B&Bs on the way, Savage said. He also enjoyed playing
duplicate bridge three to four times a week with partner Madelyn
Dunham, President Barack Obama's late grandmother.
King is also
survived by daughters Pamela Mahi Savage and Pauline King; two
grandchildren, Michael L.K. Savage and Katherine M.P. Savage;
and sister Pauline N. King.
A celebration
of King's life will be held at Borthwick Mortuary at 8 a.m.
today with burial to follow at the National Memorial Cemetery of
the Pacific. Casual attire is requested. Instead of flowers,
donations can be sent to the Navy-Marine Corp Relief Society.

Passing of Former USS Torsk CO
Evans
Paliku Kanaiaupuni King, 86, a retired navy Captain and
Financial Planner died July 10, 2009 in Honolulu of
complications from pneumonia. The youngest
son of Samuel Wilder King, former Governor of Hawaii and
youngest brother of Judge Samuel P. King, he graduated from
the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 1945 with a B.S. in
Engineering. He went on to attend submarine school and served
on submarines during the last days of World War II. As part of
his submarine tours, he participated in the nuclear bomb
testing at Bikini Atoll. As commander of the submarine
USS Torsk he led the US Fleet in the opening of the Saint
Lawrence Seaway and was a submarine squadron
commander during the Cuban Missile Blockade.
During
the Vietnam War he was Captain of the USS Manatee, an oiler
and supply ship that sailed on the Vietnam coast supplying
various naval vessels. Paliku's service as assistant director
of logistics at the Pentagon earned him his first Legion of
Merit. His second Legion of Merit was a result of his
leadership during his posting as Commander, Hawaiian Sea
Frontier. Culminating his 30 year career, Paliku served as
Chief of Staff of the 14th Naval District, Pearl Harbor.
During this time he was responsible for naval operations
Pacific-wide.
After a
very successful naval career, Paliku saw a need to help
military families plan for their own futures after service and
in retirement. For twenty years he helped families with
insurance and financial planning needs. During this time in
his life, Paliku traveled extensively and enjoyed an active
and challenging lifestyle as evidenced by his participation in
the Elder Hostel programs and almost non-stop bridge games.
Paliku
met his wife Zori Rosalia Vidok in San Diego, California as a
young Lieutenant. After 41 years of marriage Zori passed away.
Paliku is survived by their two daughters Mahi Savage,
Annandale, Virginia and Pauline King, Fort Worth, Texas; two
grandchildren, Michael L.K. Savage and Katherine M.P. Savage,
Annandale, Virginia; brother Judge Samuel P. King and sister
Professor Pauline N. King, Honolulu, Hawaii.
Kitterman, Harry Qualified on
Sabalo as EN1 in 1960; also served on Sterlet SS-392.
Retired as LT in 1968. Knapp, Ezra ....was known
as Pappy (Papa) Knapp because he was the oldest on board. Knapp
was first class Quartermaster. After the Sabalo, I
decommissioned the Billfish and left the Navy for two months. I
was sent from Texas to Calif. Later I get a call from Knapp he'd
been transfered to shore duty in San Diego and was stranded in
Elko, Nev. I could not help, but he arrived in San Diego on
my door step. So I got him an apartment in the house I was
living.
I was sent to
the Pacific and I lost contact with him and later found he had
retired in about 1948(?), and went back to New York State.
Pappy had a wife and four children who were in their teens in
1945. My wife heard from his wife years ago after we moved
to Calif. (When I retired 1960). Later, when Ann (Pappy's
wife) passed away, one of the children notified us, and told us
Pappy went before she did.
Jeff that's
the best I can recall, as it has been along time since the
40's ( 5 and half decades). [comments from Robt Phelps, Sr. recd
